Life of a Legend: Nelson Mandela.

A twelve-year programme launched by the South African Mint in 2013 — the year of Mandela's death — telling his life story chronologically across 36 coins: three released each April for twelve years, from childhood in Mvezo through education, the Treason and Rivonia trials, twenty-seven years of imprisonment, the presidency, and finally legacy. Each coin carries one of Mandela's own quotations on the reverse — "Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world," the iconic Rivonia statement, the Ubuntu reflection. The series is the SA Mint's most ambitious commemorative undertaking by scope and emotional weight, and runs through 2024.

Series overview

The Protea Life of a Legend: Nelson Mandela series was launched by the South African Mint in 2013, the year of Mandela's death on 5 December. The SA Mint's framing of the project was explicit: "The Life of a Legend: Nelson Mandela shall run for 12 years with three coins released in April each year — each set of coins shall showcase notable aspects of Mandela's life." The annual April cadence ties the release to the run-up to Mandela Day (18 July), the anniversary of his birth.

The first set, in 2013, portrayed his childhood in Mvezo in the Eastern Cape and his subsequent move to Qunu — the foundational geography that runs through Mandela's autobiography Long Walk to Freedom. The series proceeded chronologically through his life, with each year dedicated to a documented phase: education, trials, imprisonment, presidency, legacy.

The obverse of all coins features South Africa's national flower, the King Protea, in a half garland below Mandela in one of his trademark Madiba shirts — designed by artist L Guerra and die-engraver VL Chipa. The constancy of the obverse across all twelve years gives the series its visual coherence; the reverses, varying by year, carry the biographical content.

— SA Mint · 2014 second-issue launch · first Mandela Day after his death —

"The South African Mint Company is honoured to release the second Protea coin series on the first Mandela Day that he is not with us. Making it more special is that it is dedicated to education, which was so close to his heart."

Tumi Tsehlo · Managing Director, South African Mint · 2014 launch

Annual themes

Five years carry rich documented detail in public sources — 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, and 2019. The intervening years (2015, 2016, 2020 – 2024) are part of the announced 12-year programme but their specific reverse designs and quotation selections are not yet in public records at the time of writing. The detailed cards below cover the documented years; the chronological rail above remains the structural overview of the full programme.

2013

Childhood · Mvezo & Qunu

Inaugural issue · 1918 – 1930s · Eastern Cape

The series' opening year, released in the same year as Mandela's death. The reverses depict Mandela as a child practising how to write "Nelson" on a slate board — the literal beginning of the biography, captured at its most modest scale.

"Children of today are the leaders of tomorrow and education is a very important weapon to prepare children for their future roles as leaders of the community." — Nelson Mandela · 2013 series quotation
2014

Education · Fort Hare & Clarkesbury

1930s – 1940s · First Mandela Day after his death

The R25 shows young Mandela in a double-breasted suit set against the University of Fort Hare and the Clarkesbury gable. The R5 takes education as its primary subject. The R1 returns to the slate board with "Nelson", threading back to the inaugural year. The 2014 release is the series' education-focused chapter and the launch attached its release to Mandela Day directly.

"Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world." — Nelson Mandela · 2014 R5 reverse · perhaps the most globally circulated of his quotations
2017

Rivonia Trial & the ANC

1963 – 1964 · Special launch set

The Rivonia Trial — the defining political-legal moment of Mandela's pre-prison career. The 1 oz gold shows young Mandela with the Rivonia Trial statement and the names of the ten accused. The 1/10 oz gold depicts Mandela in kaross (traditional dress) with a quotation from his British Red Cross lecture. The silver features delegates at the Congress of the People.

The 2017 issue includes a special 3-coin launch set — see special editions below.

"I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." — Nelson Mandela · the Rivonia statement · 20 April 1964
2018

Imprisonment · Robben Island & Victor Verster

1964 – 1990 · Centenary year · 100 years since 18 July 1918

The series' centenary year, marking 100 years since Mandela's birth on 18 July 1918. The R1 shows Mandela looking through the barred window of his Robben Island cell, with imagery from the 1990 release. Design touches include a fragmented R1 denomination, typewriter-font typography, and a prison-wall texture — the issue is the most graphically distinctive of the series.

The Centenary year produced multiple special sets beyond the standard annual release — see special editions below.

"Prison is itself a tremendous education in the need for patience and perseverance. It is above all, a test of one's commitment." — Nelson Mandela · 2018 R1 reverse
2019

Presidency & legacy

1994 – 2013 · Three coins · Three quotations

The presidency year. The R25 shows a silhouetted Mandela with the Union Buildings. The R5 depicts an elderly Madiba. The R1 shows Mandela holding a grandchild against a paisley pattern shirt design — perhaps the warmest of the series' portraits. Each coin carries a different quotation from the post-presidency phase.

"The spirit of Ubuntu — that profound African sense that we are human only through the humanity of other human beings." — Nelson Mandela · 2019 R1 reverse
— R25: "Ours is a vision of a just and democratic South Africa..." — R5: "It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it."

The Schoeman note

Glenn Schoeman (Gold Reef City Mint & SANGS) on the Mandela coin market in 2015: "From 1994 there have been coins with Nelson Mandela's image on, and a lot of them have been worthwhile, most definitely, especially the earlier gold coins. However, right now the market is so depressed people say to me as an investment right now it is doubtful. The market is in such dire straits at the moment."

Schoeman's 2015 framing was that short-term sentiment was poor but long-term investment potential remained strong. The Centenary issues of 2018 — released after the Schoeman comment — produced the series' lowest mintages and have appreciated meaningfully since, partially vindicating the long-term thesis. Treat the 2015 dealer view as historical context rather than current market read.
