🛡️ SAAND – South African Association of Numismatic Dealers
Founded in 1981 to establish a professional code of conduct for the numismatic trade. Members adhere to a strict code of ethics, guaranteeing authenticity and fair dealing.
- Code of Ethics: Members guarantee authenticity, conduct business with morality and fairness, correct errors promptly, and submit disputes to the association first.
- Founding members: Collectors Investments (1970), Randburg Coin (1980).
- Current members: Listed on naada.co.za.
- For collectors: Buying from a SAAND member ensures authenticity guarantee and recourse.
📜 South African Numismatic Society (1941–2021)
First meeting 29 August 1941 in Rosebank, Cape Town. Objectives: study numismatics, especially South African, and mutual assistance.
- 1947: 51 members, including SA Mint and museums.
- 1964: 212 members (158 in Southern Africa, 32 overseas).
- Publications: Newsletters, journals (1964–1978), Jubilee Journal (1991).
- Bergman Trophy: Awarded for numismatic endeavour (first 1974, last under SANS in 2005).
- Became dormant by 2010s, resurrected in 2021 as Western Cape Numismatic Society.
🌊 Western Cape Numismatic Society (2021–present)
Resurrected with a new constitution, based in Cape Town. Quarterly meetings, annual AGM in February.
- President: Jonathan Odes (after passing of founding president Waldo Human).
- Secretary: P.H. Nortje (author of many research articles).
- Publications: Research articles on website (wcnumsoc.com).
- Bergman Trophy revived: First recipient Thomas van der Spuy (first complete graded ZAR set).
- How to join: Apply online, ideally introduced by a member. WhatsApp group for communication.
🌍 International Associations
- IAPN (International Association of Professional Numismatists): Randburg Coin elected as first Southern African member in 1975.
- ANA (American Numismatic Association): Open to all.
- RNS (Royal Numismatic Society): UK‑based scholarly society.
- IBNS (International Bank Note Society): For banknote collectors.
